Dazzler Films has announced its release of the epic documentary 'Echo in the Canyon' celebrating one of the biggest musical explosions of 1960s and 70s. Directed by Andrew Slater, the film charts the emergence of the Laurel Canyon music scene of LA from which emerged legendary acts that include The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and Papas. Released in the cinema in 2019 to widespread critical acclaim the film will now be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital on demand courtesy of Dazzler Films. Laurel Canyon is a mountainous region in LA's Hollywood Hills, and is considered the birth place of modern Americana music.
Nobody is sure how it all exactly started with rumours that it began with Frank Zappa himself moving to the area and creating his epic sound. Reports also indicated Jim Morrison of The Doors wrote 'Love Street' whilst living behind the Laurel Canyon Country Store. What is known is that by the mid 1960's the region transformed into a hedonistic hotbed of creativity and collaboration where musical legends hung out played songs for one another, had sex and took drugs with one another, wrote songs together and formed bands that would go on to change the shape of American music. Though often mis-labelled as soft rock or hippie music the creations of artists such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Eagles, Mamas & Paps, and Joni Mitchell were an amalgam of assorted influences; blues, rock 'n roll, jazz, Latin, country and western, psychedelia, bluegrass and folk.
Much of that era has been mythologised and romanticised over the decades and so Andrew Slater's film bring us the real stories behind the myths. Featuring never before heard personal details of the bands, host Jacob Dylan examines the lives of those great acts, their music and and how they shaped and continues to influence generations of artists. It also features a special performance as Jacob Dylan and his friends interpret and perform some of those classic in a concert held at LA's Orpheum Theatre. 'Echo in the Canyon' is essential viewing for music lovers and anyone moved, present or even influenced by one of the most creative eras of music, the age when folk went electric and the Mamas and Paps cemented the California sound.
'Echo in the Canyon' will be available to buy from 1st February and you can pre-order your copy from Amazon.
